On developing the new store, Michael Luscombe (Luscombe), CEO 
and Managing Director, Woolworths, said, "Woolworths understands the scale of 
our environmental impact and that is why we are developing realistic and 
practical business solutions to improve our ecological imprint."5 
 
Woolworths, well known as the 'fresh food people' in Australia, was established 
in 1924.  
 
Its businesses included supermarkets, consumer electronics stores, discount 
department stores, petroleum and liquor outlets, and hotels.

As of 2007, Woolworths had more than 3,000 stores in 
Australia and New Zealand with nearly 180,000 employees. In 2006-07, its annual 
sales were A$ 42.47 billion with a net profit of A$ 1.29 billion.6,7 During the 
year, the company's customer transactions amounted to an average of 21 million 
per week.

		 Woolworths was the second largest employer in 
		Australia and Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) was an integral part 
		of its corporate agenda. According to Luscombe, the company was aware of 
		the environmental, social, and economic impact caused by a business of 
		its scale and therefore implemented a wide range of initiatives to 
		improve the quality of life of its customers, the workforce, and society 
		at large.  
		 
		Though Woolworths gave importance to social commitments and 
		took up several initiatives to be a responsible retailer for several
